When Hotels Take Action…
In an interesting turn of events, I have worked with partners to develop a new product for the hotel industry called, “Conversion Driver.” The hotel that first used the product experienced a return on investment of 22 times their initial investment. That is crazy.
As a Hotel General Manager, we were always to taught to be skeptical of the new new thing. I worked for an owner who believed in being quick to follow. I understood this philosophy because the hotel industry in general is never driven to take risks. However, in today’s economic environment, how can we sit back and not be quick to LEAD.
Andy Andrews in his book, The Travler’s Gift has seven decisions that determine personal success. #3 is I am a person of action. I will seize this moment. I choose Now! I wonder if all of us chose Now and began to take actions associated with be leaders rather than followers how much more quickly we would return to the Revpar levels we so desparately seek?
Inactivity is very dangerous. As we know, there is a cumulative value to investing small amounts of time in certain activities over a long period of time. What we have to remember is that NEGLECT has the same cumulative effect. If we just stop looking for new solutions to our occupancy and ADR issues, we will only begin the eroding process of our overall business.
Remember this, in the critical arenas of life (and business), you cannot make up for lost time. When 9/11 happened, the mayor of Portland, Oregon and the tourism community put together a freedom flight to NYC within one month of the tragedy. Whether or not this truly impacted the tourism industry in NYC, who knows? Our belief was that we had to take action to help and this was the way to do it.
When Hotels take action, they will experience success. I encourage you to look at all of the opportunities that are presented to you. Don’t dismiss an idea because your budget is already committed to programs that you know are failing. You cannot make up for lost time, lost occupancy, or lost revenue.
The buck stops here! I am responsible for my past and my future. How will you seize the day today?
